A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit the Pacific coast, near the resort of Acapulco. Mexico City is vulnerable even to distance earthquakes because much of it sits atop the muddy sediments of drained lake beds that quiver as quake waves hit. The magnitude-8.1 quake in 1985 that killed at least 6,000 people and destroyed many buildings in Mexico City was centered 250 miles (400 kilometers) away on the Pacific Coast.
Magnitude 6.6, 10 kilometrers south east of Seddon, eight kilometrers deep at 2.31PM, Train services suspended in Wellington, damage to houses in Seddon and Marlborough, power outages across Marlborough.
The deadly tornado that struck near Oklahoma City had a record-breaking width of 2.6 miles. The U.S. averages more than 1,200 tornadoes a year, most of which are relatively small. Of the 60 EF5 tornadoes to hit since 1950, Oklahoma and Alabama have been hit the most -- seven times each.
Thousands of people missed and 129,225 buildings totally collapsed. The earthquake and tsunami also caused extensive and severe structural damage in north-eastern Japan, including heavy damage to roads and railways as well as fires in many areas, and a dam collapse.
